Hair loss – it’s a journey no one asks for, a path lined with unexpected turns and emotional detours. But amidst the confusion, loss of self and self-doubt, stories of resilience, hope and empowerment, like Jane’s, offer encouragement and laughter along the way. Buckle up, because this story is about embracing your true self and finding your inner warrior, one fabulous wig at a time!
Jane’s battle with hair loss started early, leaving patches in her wake just as puberty was ushering her into womanhood. While other girls her age were latching on to the latest fashion trends, Jane had to navigate through the unpredictable cycle of hair loss and regrowth.
“It fell out and grew back about 25 times. My last regrowth was about 22 years ago. Sometimes, it grows back temporarily when I am ill, like when I caught shingles once,” said Jane.
Meeting other people, knowing it’s normal to feel lost – that’s what truly helped. It’s ok to have an identity crisis.
Stay away from nasty people. You’re still feminine, no matter what.
Beauty standards create a point of anxiety for many women. With hair loss, the challenge of finding your stride with beauty standards takes on a different dimension.
“It’s devastating, losing your hair. As if that’s not enough, your eyebrows fall out and you’ve no idea who you are. My biggest challenge was feeling feminine in all of this,” Jane said as she recounted her early days of hair loss.
Initially, Jane’s wig journey was not off to a good start, “I struggled to recognise myself, and when I tried on a wig, I recognised myself even less. Wigs made me so angry until I found Wills Wig.”
“I had a terrible experience with wig sales until I met Sue and her team at Wills Wigs over 25 years ago – she was extremely patient. She must have been exhausted when I left,” laughed Jane as she recalled her first fitting consultation with Sue, owner of Wills Wigs.
“I doubt you will find anyone with more experience and wig specialism in the Midlands. Sue’s father was a wig maker – she continued with the business and moved it forward with the times.”
Today, Jane rocks a hand-tied Jon Renau “Karlie” with confidence, her signature messy-chic style a testament to her personality shining through. But the quest for wig bliss continues!
The lure of a real hair wig with a silk topper beckons, a whisper of ultimate luxury. “Can you ask Sue to treat me, please?” she winks, reminding us that a little pampering never hurts, especially when dealing with a challenging hand life throws your way.

Jane’s journey has led her to learn many life lessons quickly. Her wisdom, sense of resilience and positivity is evident through the way she speaks. Her honesty about navigating through the emotional rollercoaster of hair loss comes with many nuggets of wisdom.
Her top tip for wig care? “Don’t be afraid to be a little messy! Brush the back for smoothness, but let the top have some personality, just like you!”
That said, her most profound advice transcends wig maintenance. It’s about finding strength in community, in knowing you’re not alone. “Meeting other people, knowing it’s normal to feel lost – that’s what truly helped,” she confides. “It’s ok to have an identity crisis. Stay away from nasty people. You’re still feminine, no matter what.”
Finally, to lighten the mood, the laughter rings out as Jane shares the final juicy wig tip. “Never try to have sex with a wig on!” she warns with a mischievous twinkle. “It’s just asking for trouble! And honestly, if it does not fall off, it really was not worth it.” A reminder that even amid hardship, humour can be a powerful weapon.
Jane’s story is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to adapt, to find beauty beyond the strands, and to rock a killer wig while doing it. Embrace the journey, laugh at the mishaps, and most importantly, never let anyone dim your inner shine. The world needs your unique brand of fierce, and with the right wig (and a healthy dose of humour), you’re ready to conquer it!
